North Carolina Cancer Incidence
for Selected Primary Sites,
by Legislative District, 2002-2004

Cancer incidence is traditionally mapped by county, in part to generate county specific rates for different types of cancer. Mapping incidence by legislative district provides a way for citizens and their representatives in the North Carolina House and Senate to understand how the cancer burden is distributed electorally.

Rates can be unreliable for a given combination of race, gender, and cancer primary site, in a given legislative district. A rate is considered statistically unreliable, or unstable, when the number of cases for a given legislative district is less than 25. We have combined three years of data (2002-2004) to increase the numerators and therefore the reliability of the rates. Those districts with a numerator less than 25 are flagged by an asterisk. The numbers of cases for the three years and the exact rates by legislative district are available by request to the Central Cancer Registry. Contact the Central Cancer Registry at 919-715-4574.

The numbers in the maps are identifiers for the House and Senate districts. The shading of the district shows the level of the cancer incidence rate, with a darker shade indicating a higher rate. Some of the district numbers are hard to see when looking at the state as a whole. These maps are best viewed using the zoom tools that are a part of the Adobe Reader software. To use the zoom tool, click on the downward facing arrow to the right of the text box containing a numeric percentage, in the toolbar closest to the map, or use the ‘+’ or ‘-’ tools just to the left of that, to increase or decrease the scale of the map.
