Frequently Asked Questions about NC CHAMP
What is the North Carolina Child Health Assessment and Monitoring Program (NC CHAMP)? NC CHAMP is a comprehensive surveillance system in North Carolina that conducts an annual survey. The survey provides state-level statistical estimates on health issues of North Carolina children. Is county-level data available? Unfortunately, the sample size of the NC CHAMP survey is not large enough to produce reliable county-level estimates, so NC CHAMP county-level data is not available at this time. NC CHAMP is a cross-sectional land-line telephone survey that operates through the State Center for Health Statistics (SCHS) Survey Center. Every year, surveillance is conducted monthly using a standardized questionnaire through a computer-assisted-telephone-interviewing (CATI) system. What type of information does NC CHAMP collect? How often is it collected? NC CHAMP interviewers ask questions related to a wide variety of health-related topics, including breast feeding, early childhood development, health care access and utilization, oral health, mental health, physical health, nutrition, physical activity, family involvement, and parent opinion on topics such as tobacco and childhood obesity. Data is collected through monthly telephone interviews. What type of publications use NC CHAMP data? A list of publications using NC CHAMP data is available in the Publications section of this site. Who takes part in the NC CHAMP survey? Are they compensated? NC CHAMP is a follow-up to the North Carolina Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System, or BRFSS. The BRFSS is a cross-sectional annual telephone survey that assesses health characteristics of non-institutionalized adults age 18 and older. All NC BRFSS respondents with children under the age of 18 living in their households are invited to participate in the NC CHAMP survey. More information about the BRFSS is available. Participants are not compensated; however, their responses to survey questions provides data to public health leaders to formulate legislation and program strategies to generate systems and policy change to improve the health of children in North Carolina. How are NC CHAMP data made available for public use? Detailed data tables for NC CHAMP survey items are posted every year in the Annual Survey Results section of this site. NC CHAMP data are also available in a public-use dataset. For further information, please contact CHAMPStaff@dhhs.nc.gov. How are questions added to the NC CHAMP questionnaire? The NC CHAMP survey is revised each year to meet the child health surveillance needs of the state of North Carolina. NC CHAMP staff work directly with NC BRFSS staff to coordinate measurements of health behaviors between adult respondents from the NC BRFSS and child interviews obtained from NC CHAMP. Questions to be included in the NC CHAMP survey each year are also solicited from the North Carolina public health community. Requests for inclusion of data items are to be submitted to NC CHAMP during the spring of the year preceding the survey. Policy and an application form for placing an item on the survey are available in the Questionnaires section of this site. Where can I get a copy of the NC CHAMP questionnaire? Annual questionnaires dating back to 2005 are available in portable document format (PDF) on the NC CHAMP Web site under Questionnaires. Is the NC CHAMP questionnaire available in languages other than English? The questionnaire is also available in Spanish and is available in the Questionnaires section of this site. How are home telephone numbers obtained? NC CHAMP is a follow-up to the NC BRFSS. In the BRFSS, home telephone numbers are obtained through random-digit dialing. Do I need to obtain permission to use the NC CHAMP questionnaire or portions of the questionnaire for my own work? Do I need to obtain permission when publishing or otherwise disseminating graphs and tables based on NC CHAMP data? Generally, data and materials produced by government agencies are in the public domain and may be reproduced without permission. However, we do ask that any published material derived from the data acknowledge NC CHAMP as the original source. Recommended citation: How are NC CHAMP data weighted? NC CHAMP data are weighted to reflect the North Carolina state census (available at www.census.gov/popest/estimates). The use of weighted data adjusts the results of the sample to better represent the entire population of North Carolina. Adjustments are made to account for the unequal probabilities of selection due to the disproportionate sampling method and due to people living in households with different numbers of residential telephone numbers and different numbers of children in the home, as well as unequal non-response rates among different demographic groups. How can I receive NC CHAMP updates? NC CHAMP routinely sends updates via an email distribution list. If you would like to receive updates, send an email to CHAMPStaff@dhhs.nc.gov with a request to be added to the NC CHAMP email distribution list. How can I ask other questions or receive more information about NC CHAMP? For questions or more information about the NC CHAMP, please contact the NC CHAMP Survey Coordinator at: State Center for Health Statistics
